Physical Abuse
– inflicting, or threatening to inflict, physical pain or injury on a vulnerable elder, or depriving an elder of a basic need.
Signs of Abuse
- Injury of unknown nature
- Bruising (be aware the elder may be taking an anti-coagulant medication i.e., Coumadin, aspirin)
- Pain from movement or touch
- Broken bones, scratches, cuts, welts
- Refusing medical treatment
- Frequent hospitalizations
- Caretaker who cannot adequately explain medical condition
- Caretaker’s refusal to allow visitors to see an elder alone
- An elder asserting having been slapped, pushed, shaken or beaten
It’s important to remain alert. The suffering is often in silence. If you notice changes in personality, behavior, or physical condition, you should start to question what is going on.
